Public cloud is not cheap; built properly, it is predictable
The most common disappointment in public cloud is the first invoice arriving higher than expected. The cause is usually not the platform but the design: on-premises servers are lifted into the cloud as they are, left running around the clock, and the elasticity that is the cloud's real advantage never gets used. The same work ends up costing more.
The right approach starts with a workload inventory. Which system has to run continuously, which only needs to be up during office hours, which can scale with demand, and which should not move at all. Once that distinction is made, the cost estimate stops being a guess and becomes a calculation.
Platform choice is not a question with one answer either. Azure gives a clear advantage on identity and licensing to organizations with existing Microsoft investment. IBM Cloud comes forward in particular compliance and workload scenarios. Alibaba Cloud makes sense above all for operations aimed at the Asian market. Frequently asked questions
How can we be sure our cloud costs will not run away from us?
Before the migration we build a cost model workload by workload; afterwards, budget alerts, scaling rules and regular clean-up of unused resources come into play. Cost becomes predictable when it is watched, not when it is left alone.
Do we have to move everything to the cloud?
No, and in most organizations that is not the right answer either. Some workloads are both cheaper and more appropriate kept in-house. A hybrid structure can be a permanent design choice rather than a temporary staging post.
Which country will our data be held in?
Region selection is one of the first decisions in the migration design and is set by your regulatory requirements. Where data must stay within defined borders, private cloud and hybrid options are assessed alongside it.
